Pitching was stellar this past Sunday as the Raiders swept the Madison Blackwolves by scores of 10-0 and 10-1. Andrew Domeck pitched a shutout 6th inning for the save. Raiders 7th inning rally Flushes Royals

After dropping the opener of a fall double header, the Koufax Raiders were hot and tired, but their spirits were not broken. Michael Johnson, in relief of Ryan “Slim” Siemborski and sporting a new off speed pitch, held the Royals in check for 5 innings after the Raiders fell behind by a 3-1 score. The Raiders battled through the 6th and Johnson set the Royals down without a run through 5 innings, dominating the Up-To-Bat hitters with a combination of slicing cutters, fastballs and a devastating knuckle curve. The Raiders handed the ball to closer Devon Cabeza who allowed just one run on a steal of home to end the Royals half of the 7th, Raiders trailing 4-1.

Starting the rally in the bottom of the 7th, Tyler Fout worked a walk off of the Royals closer, and was followed by a shot to the left center alley by slugger Chrystian Foreman. The ball was ruled a ground rule double which left Fout at third and Foreman at second. The top of the order then came to bat, and Kevin Verne slashed a single to left, scoring Fout and moving Foreman to third. With the score 4-2, Verne stole second base and setup the tying run in scoring position. Andrew Domeck, who had not seen a high pitch he did not like all day, waited patiently for the Royals closer to put one in his wheel house below the belt. Domeck ripped a double into center, driving home Foreman and moving Verne to third. Franklin “Ozzy” Triozzi then stepped to the plate with the tying run at third and Verne as the winning run at second. Ozzy ripped a single, scoring Verne with the tying run and pushing Domeck to third and almost scoring on the throw home. Up to the plate marched Mark Malin, the Raiders most prolific RBI man. Amid taunts by the Royals catcher, Malin crushed a Royals fastball over the left fielders head, scoring Domeck with the winning run and finishing a fine Raiders comeback for a 5-4 victory. The team mobbed Malin, who had been injured early in the game as the Raiders claimed the come back victory.

Raiders Blank Hornets, Ground the Lightning to continue 10 Game Win Streak!

On Friday Night, the Raiders entertained the Lakewood Hornets at Mercer Field. Jacob Miller started for the Raiders and silenced the Hornet bats, recording 7 strikeouts in 4 innings before yielding the close to Devon "Ice Man" Cabeza. The Raiders bats jumped on the Hornets in the first, with Sam Buddenbaum stroking a double in the gap, then stealing 3rd base. Up came Franklin Triozzi, who layed down a perfect squeeze bunt to score Buddie and take the 1-0 lead. In the second, Mark Malin Lead off with a single, was followed by Miller with another single and Michael Johnson walked to load the bases. Chrystian Foreman then drew a walk to force home Malin. Tyler Fout was then hit by a pitch to score Miller and Johnson scored on the ensuing passed ball. In the 3rd, consecutive hits by Verne, Andrew Domeck, Malin, Miller , Ryan "Slim" Siemborski and a clearing triple by Chrystian Foreman, followed by another single by Tyler Fout, plated 8 runs, to give the Raiders an unsurmountable lead. The defense was stellar on this night, and the Raiders blanked the Hornets 12-0.

Back at it on Saturday Morning, the Raiders bats had rested well and came to life early in support of a stellar 5 inning shutout by Andrew "Dominator" Domeck. The Raiders posted an 11-0 lead, before running into pitching trouble in the 6th to allow the Lightning to score 7 runs. Slim came on to strike out the final Lightning hitter prior to a torrential rainstorm that pegged the final at 11-7. Hitting stars for the Raiders in this game were: Andrew Weisman 2-4 (Triple), Colin Blumenthal, Mark Malin 3-4 (Triple), Jacob Miller 2-4 (Double), Michael Johnson 2-3, Devon Cabeza 2-3 (Triple) as the extra base hits flowed into the Lightning outfield and caused severe power spikes in Strongsville which sapped the strength of the Lightning.

Raiders Sweep Twin Double Headers, Route Roughriders to extend win streak to 8 games.

With strong pitching performances by Jacob Miller, Sam Buddenbaum, Michael Johnson, Kevin Verne, Andrew Weisman and solid relief from Devon Cabeza, Ryan Siemborski, Noah Hirshman and Andrew Domeck, the Raiders have won 8 games in a row and are positioned to take the Wild Card playoff entry for the Puritas League.

After sweeping 2 double headers over the weekend, starting with a victory over the NEO Muckdogs on Friday Night by a score of 7-4, the Raiders came into the weekend with 4 games in 2 days. The weekend started off with the Raiders beating the Puritas Comets by a score of 9-3and a strong pitching performance in relief by Jacob Miller. Jacob pitched a complete game for the victory. In the second game, the Raiders rode the strong arm of Kevin Verne to defeat the Puritas Chiefs in 5 innings 14-5. On Sunday, the Raiders faced the Puritas Spyders in a double header. Strong bats and a dominant pitching performance by Michael Johnson led the Raiders to a 13-2 victory. Colin Blumenthal made his pitching debut and shut the Spyders down in the 6th to get the save. In the Afternoon game, the Raiders posted the Spyders a 7-2 lead, only to put forth another amazing comeback and finally defeat the Spyders 10-8.

A weary but bat-strong Raiders team took the field on Monday night against the North Olmstead Roughriders, the bats were on fire, and Andrew Weisman was on his game, as the Raiders jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first, and then added 3 more in the 3rd as Chrystian Foreman cracked a 3-run Home Run onto the Mercer II field to post a 7-1 lead. In the 5th, with hits by Franklin Triozzi, Mark Malin, Ryan Siemborski and Foreman, the Bases were loaded for Devon Cabeza. Cabeza (on an 0-2 count) parked the next pitch on the infield of Mercer II, scoring all runners and ending up in a Grand Slam, to give the Raiders a 14-1 lead. Hirshman and Domeck combined to close out the game and post the final 14-2 victory.

Raider Nation Triumphs over Mentor Red Sox in Amazing Comeback!

There have been some very good and exciting games in the U-14 Raiders history, but the game of June 30 2005 will go down as one of the best. Playing the Mentor Red Sox on their home field this night, looked to be an impossible feat as the Red Sox posted a 6 run first inning on the Raiders. In thier half of the first, the Raiders struck back and plated two runs as Mark Malin took an outside pitch to left field for a double, and was followed by singles by Jacob Miller and Crystian Foreman. Mentor got one run back in the second to make it 7-2 and then added 3 more in the third to make the deficit a seemingly impossible 10-2. The Raiders would not give up on this night. In their half of the third, Kevin Verne led off with a single,  followed by another single from Franklin (Ozzy) Triozzi. Up to the plate came Andrew Domeck who had been on a drought for a few games. The Mentor pitcher got ahead in the count by throwing several curve balls at Domeck and for some unknown reason, tried to bring a fastball by the Dominator. Bad move, Domeck laced a solid triple into left field, scoring Verne and Triozzi and on the follow up throw to third, the ball went out of play scoring Domeck.

Michael Johnson then silenced the Red Sox Bats with a combo of changeups and low fastballs as the Raiders held in there on a 10-5 score. In the fourth, Ryan (Slim) Siemborski, ( on a tear over the past 4 games) led off with a double down the left field line, advance to third on a grounder by Roman Lawson and then was driven home on a very well placed bunt by Kevin Verne. Score now - 10-6. Johnson again held the Red Sox in check and the Raiders came to bat in the 6th.

Brandon Hall led off the inning and after getting behind in the count 0-2, tore a double into right center, Siemborski - swinging like the sultan of swat himself, ripped a single to score Hall (10-7). Roman Lawson then hit a single through the left side to score Slim (10-8), advanced to third on a wild pitch and was driven home (10-9) on a squeeze bunt by Noah Hirshman. Verne then reached on a fielders choice, and moved to third on a single by Sam Buddenbaum hitting for Michael Johnson. Andrew Domeck then delivered another solid hit, bringing home Verne (10-10) as Buddenbaum headed to third. The Mentor outfield throught he ball home as Buddenbaum rounded third, and Buddie put on the brakes as he watched the throw, when the Mentor catcher bobbled the throw, Buddie broke for home and scored the lead run (11-10). The Raiders had taken the lead in the 6th!

On Came the ICE MAN (Devon Cabeza). The first Mentor hitter worked Cabeza for a single past second base, putting the tying run on. Devon then rared back and struck out the next hitter on a wicked fastball on the corner. The next Mentor hitter got behind in the count and on a 2-2 slider, hit a shot to Domeck at third, which was snabbed in the web of his glove and "Dominator" then stepped forward and fired the ball across the field to double up the runner on first and end the Game! Raiders 11- Red Sox 10!

Raiders comeback cages the Yard Dogs

In one of the most exciting games of the season, the Raiders defeated the Cage Club Yard Dogs in a Puritas League game by the final score of 8-7. Kevin Verne pitched a solid 5 innings keeping the dogs bats at bay as the Raiders led 3-2 after Tyler Fout delivered a key 2 out, 2 run single to give the Raiders the lead.  The Yard dogs then got to Raider closer Cabeza and took a 7-3 lead before Tyler Fout closed out the inning. In the 6th inning, the top of the order - Verne, Triozzi, Walsh, Domeck and Malin got the job done by scoring a run and loading the bases for Jacob "Miller Time" Miller. Getting ahead in the count, Miller drove the 2-1 pitch out of Mercer I and into Mercer II for a Grand Slam and the Raiders now enjoyed a 8-7 lead. Miller wanted the ball and wanted to close the game. Jacob got a quick two outs, before the Dogs coaxed a walk and a base hit, with the tying run on second. The next batter tried to fool Miller with a quick bunt which Jacob fielded cleanly to end the game and capture the Raider Victory!

Raiders Ground Jets at Byron

In a Rare Byron middle school home game, the Raiders dropped the Puritas Jets by a final of 8-7 on Sunday morning. Sam Buddenbaum started and held the Jets bats in check, with Jacob Miller in relief, commanding his pitches to record the final 6 outs. Hitting leaders for the game were Miller with a bomb into center to score two runs, Michael Johnson at 2-3 and Franklin Triozzi with a double and a triple. Outstanding defense was played by the Raider outfield of Ben Walsh, Jacob Miller and Ryan Siemborski. Mark Malin also made a clutch catch to settle a potential Jets rally. The Raiders have two home games this week on Monday and Wednesday at Mercer School.

Raiders Drop Archrival Heights (Andy's 9ers)

The Shaker Raiders Koufax team defeated Andy's 9ers on Tuesday June 7th 6-3. The Raiders received outstanding pitching from Starter Sam Buddenbaum (5 innings) and Closer Ben Walsh. Hitting leaders for the night were Kevin Verne, Walsh, Franklin Triozzi and outstanding clutch hits from Colin Blumenthal and a run scoring bunt single from Andrew Weisman. Buddenbaum confounded 9ers hitters all evening under the lights at Forest Park, and Walsh blazed a steaming fastball past the Heights hitters to close the game and earn the save. Tyler Fout coaxed a leadoff walk in the decisive 5th inning which led to 3 key Raider runs, with Walsh, Triozzi, Miller, Buddenbaum and Andrew Domeck contributing key hits. Kevin Verne made several outstanding plays in the hole at short to shoot down potential 9er rallies.

Raiders Roll in Puritas Opener

The Koufax Raiders opened the Puritas League season on Tuesday May 31 by defeating the NEO Muckdogs by a final score of 11-2. Leading the Way for the Raiders was pitcher Kevin Verne who twirled 5 innings of 3 hit ball dominating over the Muckdog hitters. Kevin hit his spots and mowed the Muckdogs down in order in 3 of his 5 innings pitched. Great outfield and infield support from Jacob Miller, catcher Noah Hirshman, second baseman Franklin Triozzi paced Verne. Ryan Siemborski finished the 6th and 7th innings for the save.

Hitting Stars for the night were Chrystian Foreman (4-4, 3 RBI's), Noah Hirshman (3-3, 4 RBI's), Andrew Domeck (2-2) and Andrew Weisman (2-2).

Diablos Defeat Seadogs to Win the Minor League Championship!

Just want to give all of you a season ending wrap up.  Last night @ Blvd was the championship game.  The Diablos (winner's bracket) won the game over the Sea Dogs (loser's brackets) by the score of 10 to 5.  The game was much closer than the score indicates, and it was exceptionally well played.
I want to thank you all for a great season.  You  put in a lot of time, and hard work, but it resulted in a season I am sure your players and parents appreciate.
After last season, we tried to hold a manager's meeting to discuss changes for the next season.  It was not well attended.  If any of you have any ideas, or suggestions, please email them to me.  We will be making plans for next year during the off season.
Also, please remember that equipment turn in is this Saturday morning @ 8:30 AM at our locker at the High School.  Please be there on time, as we will be closing up @ 9:30.  It is just off the Aldersyde parking lot.  Please clean your equipment before you turn it in.  It will make our job much easier next season.
Once again, thanks for all you did for our league.
