Try-Outs for 2008 Shaker Raider U12 Travel Baseball Team
The Shaker Youth Baseball League will be sponsoring a 12 and under travel baseball team in 2008. This team will be participating in the Great Lakes Baseball League and in a few tournaments next summer from May through early August. Any player in Shaker born on or after 5/1/1995 is eligible to try out for the team, though it is intended for those who enjoyed the SYBL Major Leagues and are now ready to play at a somewhat more competitive level.
We will be holding two rounds of try-outs for prospective team members.
- 1st Round, Saturday, September 15 5-7 at Lomond School - Skills assessment
- 2nd Round, Sunday, September 23 10-12 at Lomond - Scrimmage (for a subset of those trying out in Rd 1)
The team plans to practice occasionally through the winter (most likely twice a month) and will then ramp up activity in early April.

SHAKER TEAM WINS GLBL U10 NATIONAL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP
On July 19th, the Shaker Raiders defeated the Pepper Pike Pirates 9-8 to win the Great Lakes Baseball League (GLBL) U10 National League Championship in an exciting game that was tied with two outs in the last inning.
The Pirates got off to a hot start, scoring four runs in the first inning to take an early lead. Shaker came back with one run in the bottom of the first when Emmett Sweeney doubled and Jonathon Greenberg drove him home. Christian Freer pitched well in the next three innings, giving up only one run on two hits while striking out 5. Aaron Shafron scored in the 3rd inning to make the score Pepper Pike 4, Shaker 2. Shaker took the lead with 5 runs in the bottom of the 4th. Tim Williams started the inning with a walk followed by consecutive hits from Erik Jager, John Longman, Christian Freer, Matthew Podl and Gabe Nobert.
Pepper Pike was unable to score in the 5th due to strong pitching by Erik Jager and a fantastic defensive play by Aaron Shafron at short. The Pirates clawed back into the game with 2 runs in the 6th, but Shaker kept the lead as a result of a heads up double play by Christian Freer, Matthew Podl and Gabe Nobert. Shaker threatened in the bottom of the 6th with a walk by Nobert and a base hit for Scott Weinberger but they were not able to get a run across. Pepper Pike started off the 7th strongly again, getting three of their first four batters on base and tying the score with one out. The next batter hit a ground ball to third baseman James Dell who fired to catcher John Longman to get the lead runner at the plate. There were two outs and runners on second and third when Zane Eisen made the play of the game with a leaping backhand catch at shortstop to end the rally.
Emmett Sweeney started ShakerÂ’s half of the 7th with a lead off walk and a stolen base. Jonathon Greenberg hit a line drive to center that looked like it would end the game, but it was caught on a nice play in center. After a hard ground out by Tim Williams moved Sweeney to third, Pepper Pike intentionally walked two batters to load the bases and set up the force play. On the second pitch Christian Freer delivered a clutch infield hit that scored the winning run.
